What happened in the end for most of the colonies in the Americas? Revolted to create free nations. Why? Colonists formed new cultures that united them & wanted freedom from their former home.

Age of Imperialism 3. In the late 1800’s, Europe would again embark for conquest, wealth, power, & influence. This period of time is called New Imperialism (Age of Imperialism). Time when European nations extended authority & influence over Asian & African people.

Time when European nations extended authority & influence over Asian & African people. The first two nations to participate in the Age of Imperialism were Great Britain & France. Why? Britain & France were the world’s economic & military powers. Britain & France both had the requirements to become an Imperial power. They would soon be followed by Germany, Italy, & U.S.A..

Age of Imperialism 4. Requirements to become an Imperial power:

Age of Imperialism 4. Requirements to become an Imperial power: A country has to become a nation. Nations are stable, united, & organized enough for imperialism.

Nations need the technology to conquer & communicate w/ colonies. A nation needs a large & powerful military. Nations need the manpower to conquer & maintain control. This is why only Great Britain & France could begin the Age of Imperialism, then the others.

Age of Imperialism 5. Characteristics of the New Imperialism include: Control of native Asian & Africans. A few thousand Europeans that ran the colony (bureaucrats & soldiers). 6. Similarities between New & Old Imperialism: Both had colonies & trade networks. No extermination of native societies, no Atlantic Slave Trade. Both saw Europeans harvest resources, sell goods to colonies, & expand influence. This time, they wanted raw materials for Industrialization.

Nationalism & Imperialism 1. When European nations experienced nationalism, they had a swelling of pride in their culture. However, if every nation thinks it is the best, how do you prove it?

For example, how do we prove which school is the best: U.K. or U. of L.? How do nations prove which one is best? What are some ways they can compete?

For example, how do we prove which school is the best: U.K. or U. of L.? How do nations prove which one is best? What are some ways they can compete? War, sports, creating empires. To see which nation was the best, Europeans used imperialism to see which nation was the best (smartest, strongest, richest). What places could you conquer?

Nationalism & Imperialism

Nationalism & Imperialism 2. The only places left to conquer were Asia & Africa. The reasons why Africa & Asia were conquerable were because Asian & African peoples… Were divided among regional cultures. Regional cultures prevented a strong national GOV. Were technologically inferior to Europeans. Arrows & canoes vs. guns & steamships.

Modernization is the process of copying a powerful nation’s TECH & culture to become stronger.

Nationalism & Imperialism Advantages of Modernization? Become economically, militarily, & technologically stronger. Have a stronger GOV w/ more influence & stability.

Destroys a lot of your native culture. Those that resist are removed from society. The biggest problem with Modernization is trying to combine your native culture w/ the more modern, foreign culture. Examples?

Nationalism & Imperialism 3. In summary, the motivating factors to launch the New Imperialism were: Economic: European nations needed raw materials to fuel more advanced industrialization. Examples of raw materials?

Nationalism & Imperialism 3. In summary, the motivating factors to launch the New Imperialism were: Economic: European nations needed raw materials to fuel more advanced industrialization. Examples of raw materials? Colonies served as exporters of raw materials, but also as importers of European goods through closed markets. This cycle of exporting & importing materials & goods destroyed colonies’ native economies & robbed them of wealth & influence.

Nationalism & Imperialism Political: European nations wanted to prove who the best was by expanding their influence. New Imperialism reignited old rivalries & created new ones. Britain vs. France, France vs. Germany, Germany vs. Russia, Germany vs. Britain.

Nationalism & Imperialism Political: European nations wanted to prove who the best was by expanding their influence. New Imperialism reignited old rivalries & created new ones. Britain vs. France, France vs. Germany, Germany vs. Russia, Germany vs. Britain. Many nations wished to secure their share of Africa & Asia before their rival did. This race or “scramble” to imperialize spread quickly across Africa & Asia. Before this time, most Asia & African peoples voluntarily isolated themselves from European influence.

Nationalism & Imperialism Cultural: European nations justified imperialism to their peoples by claiming to civilize native people with European culture. How do you think Africa & Asian people reacted to Europeans trying to assimilate them? Europeans civilized the natives by teaching them European customs, religion, & GOV. This was called the White Man’s Burden.

How did Africans & Asians react to Europeans trying to assimilate them? Europeans civilized the natives by teaching them European customs, religion, & GOV. This was called the White Man’s Burden. European GOV’s justified this cultural genocide w/ a new philosophy called Social Darwinism. Superior peoples will pass on their culture to inferior peoples; Survival of the Fittest in society.

Nationalism & Imperialism 4. As a result of these motivating factors, Imperialism caused militarism: increase in the size of the military to prepare for a coming war. With larger militaries, most Europeans feared the balance of power would be broken.

With larger militaries, most Europeans feared the balance of power would be broken. To maintain the balance of power, European nations made alliances to discourage a rival from starting a war or face a world-wide conflict.

With larger militaries, most Europeans feared the balance of power would be broken. To maintain the balance of power, European nations made alliances to discourage a rival from starting a war or face a world-wide conflict. This fear of war would come true in 1914 with the start of World War I, the first global war made possible by nationalism, imperialism, & militarism.

Imperialism in the Classroom The next we will do is the Imperialism Activity. This activity will place you in group with the task of dividing the United States of America. Each group will have ten (10) turns to pick a state they wish to conquer. Each time your group chooses a state to conquer your group must explain why you conquered it. This could be for cultural, economic, or political reasons. If you do not have a good enough reason, then I will deny your conquest. Your goal is to build the strongest empire you can & try to connect colonies to one another! Determining whose empire is strongest will be decided by an impartial judge (Mr. Wilkinson) later on in the day!
