Causes of World War I M- Militarism A- Alliance Systems I- Imperialism N- Nationalism Plus…Sinking of the Lusitania & the Zimmermann Telegram

Militarism Militarism- glorifying and preparing an army for war.

Alliance Systems Alliance Systems- nations signed treaties or agreements to help each other out during times of war. World War I started in 1914 but the United States did not officially enter until 1917.

Imperialism Imperialism- Stronger countries taking over weaker countries led to competition for territories.

WHY? Nationalism Nationalism- Loyalty to your nation which, causes more competition between nations (Power and Prestige).

Lusitania Unrestricted submarine warfare- Using submarines to sink any ship without warning. A German U-boat sank the British ship Lusitania killing over a thousand people (128 Americans) Americans unhappy because American ships were sunk and lives lost.

Zimmerman Telegram Zimmermann Telegram-“Secret Message”- from Germany to Mexico offering help to regain lost territory from the Mexican American War. 1917 U.S Congress declared war on Germany .
