“Jude, a bond-servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, Greeting “Jude, a bond-servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to those who are the called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ.” “May mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you.” Jude 1:1-2

“Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about Purpose for Writing “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 1:3

Purpose for Writing 1) common salvation 2) contend earnestly for the faith Contend = fight, struggle, defend The Faith = complete set of moral truths or doctrine (teaching) for Christians to live by once for all (delivered to the saints)

Why The Need to Contend for the Faith “For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” Jude 1:4

Contending for the Faith 1) who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness 2) and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ Grace = favor of God Licentiousness = license to sin Deny Jesus

Three Past Examples of Licentiousness 1) Unbelieving Israel “Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, subsequently destroyed those who did not believe.” Jude 1:5

Three Past Examples of Licentiousness 2) Fallen Angels “And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.” Jude 1:6

Three Past Examples of Licentiousness 2) Fallen Angels “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; …” II Peter 2:4-5

Genesis 6:1-4 “Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose.” “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them.”

Three Past Examples of Licentiousness 3) Sodom & Gomorrah “Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example, in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.” Jude 1:7
