Analogies

Analogies Analogies are a comparison between two things. There are two types of analogies: Simile Metaphor

Simile A simile makes a comparison using the word “like” or “as.” It makes an obvious comparison. Examples: The student moved slowly like a slug. The teacher was as handsome as a movie star.

Metaphor A metaphor is like a simile, only it does not use “like” or “as.” It makes a comparison between two things Eg. Tom is a star in the class. Her eyes were shining diamonds.

Simile Questions How is a pencil like a railroad? 2. How is snow like an hourglass? 3. How is a soaring eagle like a light bulb? 4. How is a mirror like a book?

Simile Questions 5. How is moonlight like jewelry? 6. How is an old building like a cookie? 7. How is a bird like a heart? 8. How is winter like death?

Describe items using similes Pick random things in the class and create a simile with a specific object. The chair is as strong as Superman. Her lips are as red as cherries.

Describe yourselves using similes Activity 4 After students have a grasp of a simile, they will describe themselves or a partner. Students will write 3-5 sentences describing themselves using descriptive language and similes. Students will not share their information with the rest of the class. The teacher will collect all of the assignments. After, the teacher will read the paragraphs and the students will have to guess who it is based on the information.
