The different types of poetry

Limmerick remained popular ever since the 14th century They are typically only five lines and the rhyming scheme is (a-a, b-b, a) Jack and Jill, (A) went up a hill (A) to fetch a pail of water. (B) But Jack fell down (C) And broke his crown, (C) And Jill came tumbling after. (B) Hickory, dickory dock, (A) The mouse ran up the clock. (A) The clock struck one, (B) And down he run, (B) Hickory, dickory, dock. (A)

Couplet Two rhyming lines of the same length (same word count). Two types: Formal (closed) and run-on (open). Formal Each line is closed ~ there is a grammatical pause.                                              I go to work every day.                                              At five o'clock, I go play. Run-on The meaning of the first line extends to the second. It consists of a diamond shape of words on a particular topic using adjectives and does not need to rhyme. It starts with a beginning topic and ends with an ending topic.

Other poetry’s to consider Epics Long, serious poem which tell the story of a heroic figure. For example: The Odyssey of Homer. The poem centers around the Greek hero Odysseus, and his journey back home after the fall of Troy. Ballads - A poem which tells a story often set through music Free Verses A poem with no specific structure, rhythm or rhyme. Sonnets - A poem of 14 lines and any number of rhyme schemes

Integrating poetry in a classroom Poetry has served a purpose across time and cultures around the world usually to share a narrative that is important to a certain group of people or thinkers. For example, as Canadians the national anthem is one that unites in good and bad times across our multicultural diverse landscape These words often convey meanings of hope and very humane values in a few short words which are beautifully and thoughtfully strung together. Poetry is definitely a reflection of insightful creativity and ingenuity. We can integrate poetry in a classroom by watching a movie, a documentary, or by asking students to read a book. Once the activity is chosen, the students can write a poem regarding what they observed or read in stead of having them write a reflection paper.
