Explain the role of South Carolina and its leaders in the Constitutional Convention, including their support of the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Commerce Compromise as well as the division among South Carolinians over the ratification of the Constitution. Explain the role of South Carolina and its leaders in the Constitutional Convention Topic Sentence: S.C. and its’ leaders played an important role in the Constitutional Convention. The Convention was held in Philadelphia in 1787 with the purpose of replacing the Articles of Confederation which proved to be ineffective in running the new country after the Revolutionary War was over. (Shays’ Rebellion)

They wanted all slaves to be counted. In the end S.C. accepted the 3/5’s Compromise so that they could ratify the Constitution.

S.C. had both Federalist (for a strong national government) and anti-Federalists (against a strong national government) The convention being held in Charleston instead of Columbia helped the Federalists because the majority of the Anti-Federalists lived in the Upcountry. Charles Pinckney was the most influential Federalist in S.C. Though S.C. did not get everything they wanted in the new Constitution, they did ratify the Constitution in Charleston making it officially the 8th state to join the U.S.A.
