Answer 1 – 10 Heavy taxes burdened many, and helped to push many Romans into poverty and riots. Small farmers also lost their farms due to huge debts, many began working on larger farms.

Answer 1 – 40 Cheap grain and trade goods poured in. Slaves provided free labor. Roman plebian farmers couldn’t compete with the low prices that resulted and many became debt ridden, eventually leaving their farms to work for others or look for jobs in cities.
