Editing vs. revision Today: Editing

Editing – Making a paper correct Revision – Making a paper better Editing vs. Revision Editing – Making a paper correct Revision – Making a paper better

What do you think you did wrong? Your turn What do you think you did wrong? What are your normal editing problem spots?

What I saw… COMMAS Apostrophes Random capitalization Comma splices Missing commas Apostrophes Random capitalization Quotes within quotes British things (1776) MLA issues

Commas Comma splice: Search for all your commas Do you see any commas splitting a sentence in half? Are both halves of that sentence complete sentences themselves? Jane was sure it was haunted, Mrs. Reed forced her to stay up there all night all alone. This shows that Jane believes people will be accountable for their actions on earth, and if they are righteous that they will live again.

Commas St. John is much like her, he found an impossible love, and gave it up for the Lord. Helen was a very cool and collected person and even though she stands strongly for what she believes she was very quiet about it.

4 ways to fix a comma splice Jane loved Thornfield, the estate became her first true home. 1. 2. 3. 4.

Commas Missing commas: Frequently tied to dependent clauses Search for: After, although, as, as if, because, before, even if, even though, if, in order to, since, though, unless, until, whatever, when, whenever, whether, while

Commas Dependent clauses: An almost-complete sentence that cannot stand alone Despite her own perception of her beauty other people thought of her as beautiful. As time continues Jane and Rochester become closer and more comfortable in each other’s presence. When he starts to develop feelings for Mrs. Rosamond he ignores them simply because she is not practical for him. After some years of being at Lowood she realizes that she has caged herself from the world.

Commas Appositives & interjections: Paired commas need to set off information that is not critical to a sentence If it can be removed, it can be put in paired commas Jane Eyre a gothic romance written by Charlotte Bronte is a book full of saints and sinners. But really, in life surgery and makeup do not show who people really are, giving people a fake figure and personality instead of a real person born with natural beauty and real personalities. But on the inside Jane learns that it is yet another place full of pain and suffering, this time for more than just her.

Apostrophes Mr. Rochesters house burned down. Show possession or ownership with an apostrophe Mr. Rochesters house burned down. Jane Eyres aunt was awful. The houses secrets were revealed. From Gateshead hall, with it’s haunted red room, to Lowood She collapses on the doorstep of St. John and his sisters house.

Random capitalization Nouns: People, places, things, ideas Proper nouns: SPECIFIC nouns Common nouns: Non-specific nouns If it’s not proper OR starting a quote (sometimes), you shouldn’t be capitalizing it Jane asked, “Reader, do you know, as I do, what terror those cold people can put into the ice of their questions? She is interested in Mr. Rochester for two reasons: One, because she knows… Her Aunt hated Jane and mistreated her. There was “no unforced natural fruit delighted by its freshness.”

Quotes within quotes If you’ve got a quote within a quote, use a mix of single quotes and double quotes: Mr. Brocklehurst starts by saying, “‘No sight so sad as that of a naughty child,’ he began, ‘especially a naughty little girl. Do you know where the wicked go after death?’ ‘They go to hell,’ was my ready and orthodox answer.”

British things (1776) She realises that she has caged herself from the world. “Nothing bloomed spontaneously on that soil”.

MLA issues What requirement must a quote meet before it is put into the block format? “This was no unforced natural fruit delighted by its freshness.” (Bronte 174).

My favorite error You can only imagine how happy Jane was when she heard she was going to a school for girls called Lowood.

Careful wording… Drunk gets nine months in violin case Farmer Bill Dies in House Iraqi head seeks arms Squad helps dog bite victim Arson suspect held in Massachusetts fire Include your children when baking cookies

Editing & Revising EDITING REVISING C: Capitalization (1st word in a sentence, proper nouns) U: Understanding (paper makes sense, flows well, has indents where needed) P: Punctuation (periods, question marks, quotation marks, commas, semicolons, etc.) S: Spelling (CHECK IT) A: Add sentences, words, quotes, and analysis R: Remove unnecessary words, sentences, and details M: Move around words, ideas, or sentences S: Substitute words or sentences for others
