HISTORY OF THE SPEECH

THE KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL SPEECH OR INTERVIEW P preparation O organization P practice

Let’s Begin Our Preparation 1- Tell us a little about yourself and how your background has influenced your development as a person. 2- Tell us about your community experience project. What were the goals and objectives that you and your mentor established and what did you learn about yourself and the community? 3- Please show us some examples of your work from across the curriculum and throughout high school AND explain HOW these work samples demonstrate the following abilities: a.) The ability to successfully complete a research project. What did you learn about the topic and the research process? b.) The ability to analyze and solve complex problems. c.) The ability to think creatively and to be innovative. d.) The ability to communicate and collaborate. 4- What are your future goals and how have your educational experiences prepared you for your future?

The Three Parts of a Speech I. Introduction (1-2 minutes) II. Body (8-9 minutes 2 minutes per question) III. Conclusion (1-2 minutes) The question and answer period that follows your speech is NOT part of the 10-15 minute speech! The advantage to the 10-15 minute speech is that you control the content and the time!

THE INTERVIEW 10-15 minutes The questions will be asked in order. You may not use note cards during the interview. Be prepared for possible follow up questions after the initial question. Plan to spend about two minutes answering each question. Plan and practice your responses. Tab your portfolio so you can use it as supporting evidence for your responses. Be prepared for additional questions at the end.

THE CONCLUSION As you finish your response to the last fundamental question, set your portfolio down. Ask: Are there any final questions from any of the panel members? When interviewer stands, you stand Extend your hand and say thank you to conclude the interview.
