THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY: Factoring the Expression

REMEMBERING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY a(b + c) = ab + ac Solve: 4(t – 5) 6y(5 + 4) 3(3r + 9) 7(4 – 1h) Are they equivalent? 3(4f – 6) = 12f – 18 2(5 + 4d) = 15 + 8d 5g(4 + 8) = 20g + 40g

FACTORING AN EXPRESSION 20g + 48 First, find the GCF of the two numbers. 4( ) Write the GCF outside the parentheses. 4( 5g + 12) Divide the GCF into both the numbers. Keep the variable the same, and keep the sign the same.

16b + 40 First, find the GCF of the two numbers. 8 Write the GCF outside the parentheses. 8( ) Divide the GCF into both the numbers. Keep the variable the same, and keep the sign the same. 8( 2b +5)

12f + 36 First, find the GCF of the two numbers. 12 Write the GCF outside the parentheses. 12( ) Divide the GCF into both the numbers. Keep the variable the same, and keep the sign the same. 12( f + 3)

24 -42r First, find the GCF of the two numbers. 6 Write the GCF outside the parentheses. 6( ) Divide the GCF into both the numbers. Keep the variable the same, and keep the sign the same. 6( 4 + 7r)
