c. Jefferson’s diplomacy in obtaining the Louisiana Purchase from France and the territory’s exploration

Louisiana Purchase In 1800 France gained New Orleans Jefferson sent an ambassador to France to attempt to negotiate rights to use the Mississippi River Instead, Napoleon offered to sell the entire Louisiana Territory to the U.S. The U.S. immediately accepted and purchased the territory for $15 million, doubling the size of the U.S.

Jefferson expanding powers Though Jefferson believed that the Constitution should be strictly followed, he went against his own beliefs and bought the territory (though he believed it was unconstitutional) (the Constitution did not have provisions on how to purchase or take on foreign territory-Jefferson believed that if it wasn’t in the Constitution he couldn’t do it. By purchasing the territory, Jefferson set the precedent that the government could do things outside the written Constitution)

Lewis and Clark In 1804, Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark west to explore the new territory and to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean

Exploring the Territory The expedition was gone for just over 3 years They discovered many new plants and animals and made contact with many different Natives. They kept detailed records of their discoveries and mapped out the territory they explored They did not discover a water route to the Pacific

James Madison 4th President of the US The US Army and Navy had been reduced in size by the prior two Presidents Madison argued that the nation needed a strong military to help protect itself War between Britain and France-not all Americans supported getting involved

War of 1812 There were 4 main reason the US went to war against the British: -The US was upset that the British were preventing trade with France -The US was upset by British impressment -The US believed that the British were giving aid to American Indians in the west -The US wanted to take Canada from Britain

The War of 1812 Many Federalist wanted to use the war for political gain A. Jackson’s victory in New Orleans made the Federalist look unpatriotic, and destroys support for the Federalist Party The war, which ended in 1814, helped build a sense of nationalism, and built U.S. prestige in Europe During the war the British invaded the US, and set fire to both the Whitehouse and the Capital Building!

Results of the War of 1812 For the first time, U.S. citizens came together as Americans, and not just as citizens of individual states: The US developed a National identity!

James Monroe The “Era of Good Feelings” James Monroe (1817): -No political infighting (why?) -Created a new national bank to ease economic problems -placed tariffs (taxes) on foreign goods to help U.S. manufacturing

The Monroe Doctrine Named after President Monroe -Issued in 1823, the Doctrine marked the start of the U.S. policy of preventing European powers from further colonizing and interfering with western hemisphere countries (Europe-stay out)
