Virtual Reality The Future of Sports By Evan Weiss

Goal The goal of this PowerPoint is to show why owners and/or coaches of professional sports teams should invest in virtual reality

Television Broadcasts Next VR is teaming up with Fox Sports Televising games in Virtual Reality, offering fans the best views possible while watching from the comfort of their own homes First NBA game of the season was broadcasted in Virtual Reality (Golden State Warriors vs. New Orleans Pelicans)

What Current Broadcasts are like Where VR goggles View the arena in 3D “Next VR will have 360-degree cameras positioned at the starting line, in a pit row, and in the garage…” –John Gaudiosi (Fortune) “…Viewers could see the game from directly behind Jordan Spieth as he teed off. Participants were so close that the head of the driver swung before their virtual noses.” –Jason Johnson (IQ)

More on Broadcasts “Fans who own an Oculus Rift device can now where the device and feel like they are at any arena watching the action live.” -Evan Weiss Unit 2 paper Fans were able to watch NBA season opener in Virtual reality, watching with a courtside view.

How Fans will watch games Fans will sit on their couch wearing virtual reality goggles The graphics will look as real as possible Fans will see the game from numerous different angles Watch with google glass, Oculus rift, etc.

Fans Fans will get the feeling that they are on the field/court Fans will get a closer look at how hard NFL players are getting hit This will lead to more sympathy for the athletes Fans will become more passionate as they get an even better taste of what it is like to be on the field

Ticket Sales Will Increase People will be exposed to the game in ways never thought to be possible This will create a new generation of fans The new generation will drive up ticket sales People will get a taste of the game day atmosphere and will want to see the game in person Nothing can replace the game day atmosphere

Potential Ticket Sales Problem Fans might decide that there is no need to spend money to go to the game when they can just watch the game in there house with better graphics Games might be more exciting in VR then in person

Potential “We think that non-racing fans who experience the VR broadcast will want to go to a race in the future.” -Brad Allen (Executive Chairmen of NextVR)

Player Training Quarterbacks can simulate being in the pocket in practice using VR “The 49ers, Cowboys and several other teams are using panoramic cameras that can allow the quarterback to study and relive actual reps taken during practice” -Stats.com

Training “The virtual reality technology is going to help me fine-tune my decision making in games and allow me to train as if I’m at practice without having to be on the ice” -John Carlson Washington Capitals defensemen Players can practice without leaving there home Luke Fox wrote, “Experience R.A. Dickey’s knuckleball without actually stepping into the batters box.”

Coaches Coaches can get a unique look at opposing teams strategies Can help coaches find wholes in the defense Be able to simulate opposing teams defense to help players get a good vision of what they will be going up against (i.e. Syracuse’s 2-3 zone)

Some Owners are getting a head start “This is a tremendous opportunity for our players to view 3D video replays that will help them improve their on-the-court and on-the-ice decision- making skills.” Ted Leonsis (owner of the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards Peter Gruber (Owner of the Golden State Warriors) is a major investor in NextVR Mark Cuban invested in VR company Virtuix Omni

Living the life of an athlete https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFKZ3zFsbS8 The video above gives the fan a simulation of what it is like to be in the batters box in a Major League baseball game If this video doesn't’t sell the VR experience than nothing will
