Management successes: Rationalisation of staff resources towards the management of the MPA: Four City staff managing the MPA Cleaning and removal of rubbish from the MPA: 30 bags of refuse as well as several tyres removed (ERMD staff) Removal of Whale carcass Management Plan incorporated into the City’s Coastal Management Programme (ICM Act) Permission from DEA to alocate budget for once – off capital expenditure towards cost of new patrol vessel. City funded 4x4 vehicle purchased Regular law enforcement patrols conducted throughout area (by foot and by boat) Stakeholder engagement through SEAL (Somerset West Site Environmental Advisory Liaison Group) forum Engagement with Film Industry re filming in MPA’s Two adjacent Blue Flag Beaches & Blue Flag Marina Environmental Education Programmes & Awareness MPA Forum 2015 / Helderberg Marine Protected Area

Key challenges/Needs: Operational - Internal (City) budget limitations Social Pollution from the Lourens and Eerste Rivers Boundaries of the MPA defined by position of river mouths – confusion (public) over where regulations become applicable Events applications: Film shoots (access with vehicles, fires, private property abutting MPA, national key point) Walking Cheetahs on the beach… Economic - No revenue generating activities for the MPA - Disenfranchised people within the MPA Environmental - Establish a biodiversity inventory of the MPA MPA Forum 2015 / Helderberg Marine Protected Area

Rezonation/Expansion Plans: Currently no rezonation/expansion plans for the MPA Coastal Economic & Spatial Development Framework being developed Assessment of existing and proposed coastal projects city-wide Development of a CESDF for enhancing the socio-economic and environmental potential of the City’s coast Promote informed and strategic decision making city-wide Inform aquaculture proposals that consider broader socio-economic and environmental issues Medium - long term planning (currently absent from a purely coastal perspective) In relation to the MPA: inform development and activities being proposed in the Helderberg area. MPA Forum 2015 / Helderberg Marine Protected Area

MPA Forum 2015 / Helderberg Marine Protected Area 2016 Priorities: Management City Marine and Coastal Law Enforcement Unit established: engaging with SAPS, DAFF, SANParks for collaborative law enforcement operations. Organise more beach cleaning events with the nearby community Open discussions with Denel to contribute towards the management costs of the MPA. Obtain Blue Flag Status for adjacent Beaches Conduct environmental education programmes in region Training City staff members to undergo MPA/coastal management related courses Skippers license and 4x4 training Together with DAFF, City will be hosting FCO training for staff. Research Develop and implement a research and monitoring programme for the MPA and develop a partnership with a local university to run this programme.
