The Preamble of the United States Constitution We the People of the United States of America, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

We the people of the United States What does it mean? Democracy The people have the power How do we do it? The citizens 18 and older vote for our nation’s leaders

In Order to form a more perfect Union What does it mean? We keep working to make our government and our nation better How do we do it? Free Public Education National Highways One common currency (money) all 50 states use National Parks Have consequences in place

establish Justice What does it mean? Create Fairness How do we do it? Laws We have a process if you are accused of a crime Courts, judges, juries, defense attorneys, public trials

insure domestic Tranquility What does it mean? Maintain peace and order in our nation How do we do it? The National Guard Federal police forces such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), U.S. Marshals, etc

provide for the common defense What does it mean? Protect our nation How do we do it? The armed forces Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, etc

promote the general Welfare What does it mean? Promote the health and well being of the general public Better the lives of Americans How do we do it? Allow aid to the needy Labor laws and safety laws at work Food and Drug safety laws
