Weight loss Products & Services OBJ: I will investigate the pros and cons of current weight loss products and diets on the market

Bellwork What are the negative consequences to these kind of diets? What weight loss products or services currently on the market would you consider suggesting to a friend who had a significant weight problem?

Weight loss products and Fad Diets Americans spend an estimated $42 billion annually on weight loss foods, products, and services. With that much money at stake, it's no surprise there are an overwhelming number of "fad" diets and other weight-loss products on the market

Hydroxycut? Benefits of Hydroxycut: Consequences of Hydroxycut: weight loss (average 12 lbs), increased metabolism, increased energy, decreased appetite Consequences of Hydroxycut: Increased blood pressure, heart rate, sweating Headaches, light-headedness, and dizziness Restless and jittery Not FDA approved

Alli? Benefits of Alli: Encourages healthy eating habits Encourages exercise FDA approved Consequences to Alli: urgent bowel movements, diarrhea, gas with oily spotting Waste of money. Will only lose a couple of more pounds compared to diet and exercise alone.

Weight Watchers Benefits to Weight Watchers Steady, long-term weight loss Education on healthier eating habits and portion size Encourages eating from all the food groups Point system makes the process simple

High Protein Diet - Adkins These programs generally recommend that dieters get 30% to 50% of their total calories from protein. Normally your body burns carbohydrates for fuel. When you drastically cut carbs, the body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis, and it begins to burn its own fat for fuel.

Pro’s /Cons Pro’s- leaves dieter feeling satified after eating When your fat stores become a primary energy source, you may lose weight. Lose weight fast – sense of accomplishment to continue to lose weight Con’s High cholesterol (LDL). Unhealthy metabolic state (ketosis). Headaches/irritability Limited fruits/veggies

NutriSystem Nutrisystem aims to simplify weight loss. You don’t have to count calories or carbs. For the most part, you don’t have to make sure you’re eating proper portion sizes Delivered to door – add fruits/veggies "Smart" carbohydrates. These don't raise your blood sugar as much as other foods. On the plan, you’ll need to limit or avoid high-GI foods (like white bread, white rice, and certain fruits). Serving sizes already measured/online tools Expensive – 300.00-400.00 a month/limited to each out/not gluten free/foods are processed/not family friendly/not a lifetime dietary plan

Questions Do these kind of “diets/weight loss products” encourage people to create an unhealthy relationship with food? What if losing weight starts to become an obsession?
