Standards 2.A.1a Identify the literary elements of theme, setting, plot and character within literary works. 2.B.1a Respond to literary materials by connecting them to their own experience and communicate those responses to others. 2.B.1c Relate character, setting and plot to real-life situations 2.B.1b Identify common themes in literature from a variety of eras. 2.A.3b Describe how the development of theme, character, plot and setting contribute to the overall impact of a piece of literature. 2.B.2b Identify and explain themes that have been explored in literature from different societies and eras.

6 Questions What was JKR trying to teach her readers through the series? Did JKR use any parallel real world examples that she showed in the novels? How did the series impact this generation? What inspired JKR to create the harry potter series? When and where did the series take place? What were the major themes throughout the series?

Now put yourself in the Wizard World Get into groups of four. Each member in the group will be assigned a different question to look up. Students will act as a team to present their ideas to the class It’s the students responsibility to follow through with the roles for each question that they are assigned

Group Roles Group member #1: Time Manager Group Member #2: Recorder Keeping track of time, making sure group is focused. Group Member #2: Recorder Taking notes and writing down answers for the group Group Member #3: Researcher Going to the sources to find answers Group Member #4: Presenter Present material to the class.

Teacher Extensions The teacher will read the first book in class to make the students aware of the subject Have students refresh their memories on a worksheet with plot definitions, setting, and themes. Show the personal interview of J.K. Rowling Have students present different kinds of themes to the class Have students act out scenes from the novels.

Evaluation At the end of the lesson the groups will be evaluated by a presentation each group will construct. Teamwork, participation, and determination will be evaluated.
