Essential Question What is the difference between dramatic, verbal, and situation irony? Which one is used more in stories?

Educational Hook Think of a time in your life when you expected one thing to happen, but something else entirely took place. Describe the event on your own sheet of paper.

Irony What is irony? The difference between what one would expect to happen and what actually happens

Situational Irony What is situational irony? When one’s efforts produces the opposite results of what was expected. Example: A woman has been saving painfully to buy a golden watch. Just hours after buying the watch, her daughter arrives home with the same watch as a gift for her!

Verbal Irony What is verbal irony? A difference between what is said and what is actually meant SARCASM Example: When it is a dark, gloomy, rainy, day and someone says, "Wow, what a gorgeous day!"

Dramatic Irony What is dramatic irony? When the audience knows something that the characters do not Example: Horton Hears a Who In Horton Hears a Who, Horton seems to be losing his mind because he is talking to himself. We, the audience, know that Horton really is talking to little people on a bubble, but everyone else thinks he's crazy.
