Why throw away? Give it another life!

European Week for Waste Reduction 2017

Last year, we came up with an idea to recreate an abandoned area in our school in order to embellish it, reduce the waste which had been collected in the area and give it another function. The new function is a reading garden area. Last year we started with weed cutting, then a clean up day during which we picked up plastic bottles and pine cones which were reused for craft activities. We also picked up litter to clean up the area. We also gave a new function to old furniture which was refurbished in order to be reused to pot plants in them.

BEFORE THE CLEAN UP DAY 2016!

Our first meeting to discuss how we were going to change the area. Taking measurements of the area.

Reusing the waste material

The making of Potting Planters from pallets

Placing the stones aside to reuse them in planters for water drainage. Moving the potting planters.

This year we decided to keep up with the same theme for EWWR and on the 27th October 2017, we did another clean up day so we can launch our new reading garden area As Soon As Possible. Regarding the reading garden area we are going to do tree planting sessions with our students on the 23rd November

We are also going to do workshops in order to show how to create different things from something that was going to be thrown away. Prince’s Trust XL Achieve Year10s and our school council are using jars and changing them into candle holders for sale.
