Sermon on the Mount The Gospel of the Kingdom Matthew 5 - 7

Judge Not That You Be Not Judged The Sermon on the Mount Judge Not That You Be Not Judged “Judge not, that you be not judged!” 7:1 Frequently quoted whenever someone is pointing out the sins or faults of another. The impression is that we should never make moral judgments in what we see in others. Matthew 7:1-6

Is that true – Is this Jesus’ meaning? Matthew 7:1-6

Judge Not That You Be Not Judged The Sermon on the Mount Judge Not That You Be Not Judged Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. Criticism? Matthew 7:1-6

Local Church Discipline? The Sermon on the Mount Judge Not That You Be Not Judged Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Judging – The “Remote” Context Jesus taught people to “judge with right [righteous] judgment” John 7:24 Christians have a responsibility to judge “those inside the church” 1 Cor. 5:9-13 We are to “test the spirits,” which requires making judgments 1 John 4:1

Jesus Condemned A Specific KIND of Judgment Judging when one is blind to his or her faults 7:3-5 Preceded by the positive, “Be merciful” Luke 6:36 Paul taught the necessity of proper “introspection” when helping others Galatians 6:1-2 “The Lord is here condemning the spirit of censoriousness, judging harshly, self-righteously, without mercy, without love.” (Hendriksen) James warned against making judgments without mercy James 2:13

Times When We MUST Make Judgments: AFTER we have corrected our own faults 7:5 When we find a Christian “caught in any transgression” Galatians 6:1-2 We must judge between those who are “holy” and those who are “dogs” and “pigs” 7:6 See also 2 Timothy 2:24-26; Matthew 10:12-15; Acts 13:42-46

Judge Not That You Be Not Judged The Sermon on the Mount Judge Not That You Be Not Judged “Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?” James 4:11-12
