Why Do Geographers Use Maps, and What Do Maps Tell Us? Reference Maps: show locations of places and geographic features Mental Maps: drawn from memory  reflect a person’s spatial perception Cartogram: map that is altered to reflect/chart a particular variable Thematic Maps: tell stories, typically showing the degree of some attribute or the movement of a geographic phenomenon © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Reference Maps show specific location of places and other geographic features

Mental Maps Show a person’s internal perception of space.

Cartogram Expands or shrinks the area of locations to demonstrate different types of data.

A Cartogram: Population

Another type of Cartogram Diarrheal-type Deaths

Thematic Maps Thematic maps are designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area. several different versions: Choropleth Dot-density Proportional Isoline

Choropleth Maps Use differences in shading, coloring, or the placing of symbols.

Dot-density Maps Uses dots in a specific area. Each dot is a specific quantity.

Proportional Symbol Map The larger the symbol, the higher the frequency.

Isoline Maps Uses continuous lines joining points of the same value.

An Isoline map Temperate climate necessary for prime agricultural land
