Single Camera Sci-Fi Editing Evaluation Caitlin McAuley

Discussing the overall product During our production we had to think of a contingency plan as we did not have enough footage to meet the briefs requirements. For our contingency plan we had to decide what we could film as an ending for the short film, we had some difficulties coming up with a good idea as we were unsure of what to film. We decided to film a driving scene, in which the main character would get in his car, drive away and then crash. This section of the edit was the best as there were no jump cuts which looked smoother, and the clips were placed

Discussing the overall product I believe that a positive thing about our short film is the edit as it is well paced which makes it easy for the audience to follow, and the edit also matched well with the background music we decided to use. This meant that the edit was more astatically pleasing to watch as the timing and the build up of the narrative did not juxtapose with the song which improved the edit overall.

Discussing the overall product A negative about our edit was that ended up rushing the edit as we again, ran out of time to complete it as good as we would have liked too. This meant that the edit lacked in some areas (such as colour correction and sound effects) which effected the product overall as it was not as good as it could have been. If we were to have used more sound effects it would have helped to set the atmosphere of the short film and it would have improved the overall product.

Discussing the overall product Another negative thing about our edit was the obvious jump cuts and the excessive orange tones in the office scenes. A lot of the scenes we filmed in the office were too over exposed and they looked orange, which made many of them unusable which intern meant that we had to constantly use the same clips and keep cutting quickly so the edit would not loose the attention of the viewer. As we ran out of time when editing the short film, we did not get to colour correct the clips well enough to not make them orange. We decided to leave a lot of them only slightly colour corrected as we did not want to spend an excessive amount of time on only a short amount of clips as the edit would have looked uneven and worse than it did.

Constraints Experienced As we used a song we downloaded from YouTube, if we wanted to post the short film we would have to check if the song was copyrighted and if it was, we would have to request permission to use the song, or we would have to re-edit the short film using a royalty free song/ a song that we did have permission to use. We also used sound effects that were downloaded from YouTube, again we would have to check if these effects were copyrighted before we posted our film or we would have to ask for permission from the owner so we could use them.

Management As a group, we did not have the best time management as we had to re- schedule our filming day on more than one occasion due to inconveniences with cast and crew members which left us low on time when it came to filming. This meant that we rushed the first and only planned filming day which caused us to not film enough footage and the footage that we did film was not of good quality I think that the reason we ran out of time was because we did not have enough team meetings and we were both slightly confused with the idea we had created which caused the production to fail multiple times. This effected the edit as we ended up rushing it which meant that we did not pay as much attention to small details which would have improved the overall product.

Positive Feedback “the driving scenes were really cool and it helped close the film” “the scene where the guy is a bit disorientated was filmed really well and it was obvious that he was supposed to be disorientated” A lot of the positive feedback we received was about the driving scene. They say that it was edited well as it engages the audience and it helps to close the short film. This is good as we were unsure whether the driving scene would be incorporated into the rest of the film but people seemed to like it. We also received positive feedback about on the editing and filming of the scene where the character gets up after being electrocuted. This is also good as we were unsure of how to edit it together at first without it looking weird or boring to the viewer.

Negative Feedback “it was rather different from the original idea that was pitched” “there are a few clear jump cuts when he gets stabbed” The main piece of negative feedback we received for our short film was that it was rather different from the idea that was originally pitched. This was due to a lack of footage and we had to create a backup plan that we could film on short notice so we were able to reach the briefs requirements. Someone also commented on the clear jump cuts in some areas of the edit. This was because the camera angles did not match up properly, or we must have left a very small gap between the different clips.
