Single Camera Production A single camera production uses one camera throughout the filming of various shots. These types of productions usually involves lots of editing due to the large number of shots recorded over time. Using a single camera means that you can check the shots as you work meaning that you can instantly correct any mistakes, therefore finishing with a more professional piece. Single camera productions are cheaper but yet still effective to ensure that no other cameras are seen in the background. This gives it a more natural feel. The main issue with a single camera production is that it is more time consuming due to the fact that you have to move the camera to different angles and locations and therefore more editing will be needed in the post-production process. Multi Camera Production Multi Camera productions range from a two camera interview to a 20 camera sporting event or 10 camera live television programme. This type of production gives the freedom to capture multiple shots within a short period of time. The cons of this sort of production is that mistakes can be easily made and not so easily edited out. For example during a live broadcast the presenter may be looking at the wrong camera or another camera may be in the way of the shot, therefore giving an unprofessional finish. Mistakes are often made on live television due to the manic rush of directors and producers in the television gallery in which even the best can crack under the pressure. Series, Serial and Single Drama Serial Dramas include a story that is ongoing in which the same plot carries on from week to week, in a serial the story is different each week. An example of a serieal is a soap such as EastEnders in which there are different stories each week and the episodes show no sign of ending. An example of a series is Happy Valley in which the same story carried on throughout 8 weeks and had a finale episode which concluded. A single drama is one individual drama episode. These can be short in length but tend to be slightly longer, usually around an hour long to engage the audience into the depth of the story. Genre and Sub-genre A genre is the theme of a particular film or television programme. A sub-genre is where usually two, although sometimes more, genres come together; for example, a horror and comedy come together to create the popular television serial ‘Scream Queens’. There are some popular genres: Period Drama – A drama with an historic storyline. An example of a period drama is the hugely successful Downton Abbey which is set between 1912 and 1925. Call the midwife is also a popular period drama. Drama Documentary – A drama documentary is a programme of film that is acted out but based on true events. This genre is usually very captivating due to the idea that the story is true. In short, they are dramatized re-enactments of actual events. Captain Phillips is one of my favourite films and is based on a true story in which pirates take over a cargo ship.

More genres… Crime - The crime genre is a programme or film that fictionalises crime, the detection of crime and the motives. An example of this genre is Agatha Christie. Soap Opera- Some of the longest running series on British television such as EastEnders and Corronation Street. Soap operas although fictional try to mimic real life situations in a more dramatized way. Comedy- This genre puts emphasis on humour. These programmes or films are designed to make the audience laugh throughout and often include exaggerated characters. Examples of comedy include ‘Anchorman’ and ‘Bad Santa’ Horror- Usually fiction, this genre aims to frighten, scare or make the viewer nervous. Some of the most popular horrors include ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘Scary Movie’ Romance – This genre focuses on love an affectionate relationships and are very popular with the likes of ‘Me Before You’ and ‘Bridget Jones’ Baby’

Genres are important to be able to categorise films or television programmes effectively. Genres let the audience know in advance what the films purpose is and also gives media text a clear and defined way to describe the item. Using specific genres also ensures that the item has a clear outline / storyline. For example a romance will almost always have an affectionate couple with a detailed love story; on the other and, a horror will rarely include these storylines and will instead focus on fear. Statista show that in 2015 Action films were by far most popular and were ranked first by the box office, bringing in a revenue of almost £394million. Action films include the ‘James Bond’ movies and the recently released ‘San Andreas’. Other popular, and therefore high revenue, genres include Animation (£210million) and it was close between Comedy and Drama totalling over £265million between them. Documentaries and Romances both made under £15million in revenue, though. Genres are able to stay relevant due to the high demand for the films and amazing technology in film making. For example San Andreas includes amazing special effects which includes realistic earth quakes and a gigantic tsunami.
