Space or art forms used in creating works of art? Is the area on which the artist works. What are some types of spaces or art forms used in creating works of art? Space has two characteristics: positive…the object negative…the voided area surrounding the object.

SHAPE Two-dimensional area made by connecting lines The contour of an object Shapes may stand out also by a difference of value, color, or texture.

COLOR The character of a surface created by the response of vision to light reflections. It identifies objects, creates moods, and affects emotions (warm, cool, primary, secondary, complementary, and so on).

TEXTURE The roughness or smoothness of the surface of a piece of art. Texture can be tactile (sandpaper) or illusion (looks soft but is not).

Line refers to the path of a moving point at the edge of a flat shape or outline of a solid object It is longer than it is wide. Types of lines are straight, curvy, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zigzag, implied, and angular. Direction pertains to the movement that a line may have or seem to indicate. LINE

FORM The three dimensional projection of a shape It has volume, dimension, appears to have mass Frequently used in sculpture May also refer to the overall organization of the work of art

VALUE The appearance of lights and darks found in a work of art. These range from black to white with numerous shades of gray in between.

Space, lines, shapes, colors, and textures can be interpreted as having expressive qualities that create moods. Thick or thin lines, hard-edged or soft shapes, light or dark colors, delicate or heavy shading, curved or straight lines, rough or smooth textures—take your pick! What emotions (mood) and meanings (purpose) are created by the use of art elements all together in this illustration of Circe?
