Lesson 3.3 - Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers EQ: How do you compare and order rational numbers?
Rational Numbers - Classifying Numbers When you divide a fraction, if there is NO remainder, the number is a whole number if positive, and integer, and a rational number. If there IS a remainder, the number is a rational number only.
Converting a fraction to a decimal To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (the top number of the fraction) by the denominator (the bottom number of the fraction. Ex. 3 5 = 3 ÷5 = .6
Equivalent Fractions and Decimals Fractions and decimals that represent the same value are equivalent. The number line shows equivalent fractions and decimals from 0 to 1.
Ordering Fractions and Decimals You can order fractions and decimals by rewriting the fractions as equivalent decimals or by rewriting the decimals as equivalent fractions.
Ordering Fractions and Decimals
Ordering Rational Numbers You can use a number line to order positive and negative rational numbers.
Ordering Rational Numbers Five friends completed a triathlon that included a 3-mile run, a 12- mile bike ride, and mile swim. To compare their running times they created a table that shows the difference between each person’s time and the average time, with negative numbers representing times less than the average.
