Outline of Discussion Defining Health Promoters Health Promotion Canada evolution Atlantic Chapter/Network Development Challenges Successes Ideas? Questions?

Health Promoter Main role and function is health promotion. Their work reflects the Ottawa Charter’s strategies and actions. Where? E.g. community health centres, government departments, Public Health, NGOs, health charities, university/academic health promoters etc.

Pan-Canadian Health Promoter Competencies June 2016, a new entity called: Health Promotion Canada emerged. Summer 2016 logo consultation occurred Fall 2016 mission, vision, and values established Fall 2017 launched HPC website

Mission: support the advancement of health promotion practice in Canada Vision: By 2026, HPC will be a vibrant, connected and effective collaborative for workforce development and action in health promotion. So that by 2046, all health promoters are equipped to foster health equity for all in communities across Canada.

Aims to engage those studying, volunteering, researching and working in the field of Health Promotion to advance the profession, while raising the profile of Health Promoters. Seeks to advance the critical importance of health promotion and its practice through professional development, membership, member communication, and advocacy.

Functions of a local chapter/network representing health promoters on local, provincial/territorial and national levels; providing leadership opportunities at the local level; providing the opportunity to network with other health promoters on educational, professional and social levels;

Challenges in Chapter/Network Development Geography Diverse health services structures across regions Uncovering Health Promoters – who identifies? where are they? Technology

Successes in Chapter/Network Development Infrastructure of HPC Interest and participation of all 4 provinces Relationship development with interested groups and committees Information sessions held in NS and Nfld Planning sessions with NB and PEI Professional Development Opportunities
