Supernatural Occurrences Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair (Shakespeare, Line 48, p.260) Witches are telling the prophecy of Macbeth All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter (Shakespeare,, Line 50, p260) The three witches tell Macbeth, what is to come towards to Macbeth and Banquo. But signs of nobleness, like stars shall shine(Shakespeare, Line 41, p. 264) Macbeth starts to realize that the witches prophecy is true. Is This a Dagger which I see before me, the handled toward my hand? (Shakespeare, line 33, p. 273) Macbeth is hallucinating, and seeing nonexistent things. Heres the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand(Shakespeare, Line 49-50, p.319) Lady Macbeth is hallucinating, and seeing blood on her hand that wont wash off.

Holinsheds Chronicles Witches told prophecies In the Holinsheds Chronicles, Donwald committed his crime, of killing the Scottish tyrant King Duffe, at night. King Duffe was also was also a guest in Donwalds Home. Donwald was also lead by his ambitious and iron-willed wife.

Witchlore of the Celts In the witchlore of the Celts, witches were seen as triple goddesses. However in the Irish Folklore, witches were seen as the children of Calidan. The witches speak in threes, which was the sacred number for the Celts

Witchcraft in the Renaissance In the Renaissance, witches were to blame for unexpected events. Women were usually accused of witches the most. Reason: This was largely due to the fact of the invention of the printer the books that were published Bibles and other hold books promoted the ideas about witchcraft and witches. (yogarajah9) The hysteria and paranoia about witches which took place in Europe; however, it did not entirely reached England. Queen Elizabeth I in reaction passed a new and harsher witchcraft Law in 1562, which lead to witch hunts and the prosecution of witches.

Connections Holinshed Chronicles: Like in the Holinshed Chronicles, Macbeth had witches tell prophecies. Macbeth Rises to power when he kills King Duncan in his sleep (as King Duncan is resting at his home), like in the Holinshed Chronicles Macbeth and Donwald both had ambitious and iron-fisted wives. Witchlore of the Celts: Like in the Witchlore of the Celts, the three witches were seen as triple goddesses, but in Macbeth they are presented as hags. Witches speak in Threes in the Witchlore and Macbeth. (They speak together) The Witches in Macbeth, resembled more of the Elizabethan stereotype (witches are forming a pact with the Devil), than triple goddesses. Witchcraft of the Renaissance: When Macbeth starts to believe that the witches prophecy is true; this is similar to people blaming unexplained occurrences on witches. In Macbeth, the witches match more of the Renaissance DESCRIPTION of witches, than the Holinshed Chronicles or the Witchlore of the Celts.
