USING ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 Intro Graphic Design SELF PORTRAIT USING ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 1 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 OBJECTIVE Use the skills learned through demonstrations to create a photorealistic self-portrait with Adobe Illustrator’s vector tools. (We’ll expand upon the skills you began to learn during the South Park assignment, improving your abilities in Illustrator.) 2 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 TOOL REMINDERS Selection Tool (Black Arrow) Used for bigger changes: to move objects, adjust size via bounding box Direct-Select Tool (White Arrow) Used for smaller changes: fine-tune shapes by adjusting individual anchor points & handles on strokes of objects The BRUSH TOOL & PENCIL TOOL create complex, curved shapes. CLOSE YOUR SHAPES! Start & stop the stroke at the same point to fill completely PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 3

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 The Pen Tool The pen tool gives you maximum control of objects you draw by working one anchor point at a time, creating an object’s boundary. SINGLE-CLICK will give your objects a choppy, geometric border. CLICK&DRAG allows you to control how the stroke curves between anchor points. (this takes time to learn how to control) * Add handles (to curve line) to any anchor using the convert button, located in the control bar at the top of the screen: PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 4

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 File Set-Up Name: Yourname-portrait.pdf Dimensions: 8” x 10” vertical LAYERS Set up different layers so you can isolate specific areas of your image while designing. Organize these from front to back spatially. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 5

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 Capture Image Take pictures of yourself using either a the webcam on your computer (where available) or a camera. Select your favorite picture to use for the illustration. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 6

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 Place Image (Be sure you are on the “Photo” layer.) • Select File -> Place. Insert your photo, then scale to fit the page. • Adjust Transparency of layer to 30% • Lock Layer PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 7

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 Begin Illustration Start with the parts farthest away from you, and work on the appropriate layer so you can isolate work areas. • Look carefully at the photo, attentive to details in shading, etc. • Individual objects can be locked as you work (command + 2), and layers can be locked as they are completed. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 8

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 Develop Illustration As you complete layers, lock the ones you aren’t working on. To accomplish good details, zoom in up close. Toggle the photo layer’s visibility on and off to watch your progress. • Experiment with using gradients (both linear and radial) • Within the gradient menu, you can adjust transparency, allowing for better blending of objects. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 9

Requirement Reminders DRAW OBJECTS using Pen Tool, Brush and/or Pencil BLEND OBJECTS using gradients & transparency ZOOM IN to see details up close. TOGGLE VISIBILITY of your photo layer while you work LOCK layers & individual objects while you work to avoid accidentally moving key elements. • To ensure the best grade possible, use as much detail as possible. • If you finish early, earn extra credit by completing “advanced enrichment activities” as seen on Work Order. • Remember to keep all aspects of your image school-appropriate. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 10

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011 BEGINNING OF CLASS • Get out your Work Order, Time Log, and something to write with. • Log-in to the computer and open any files related to this assignment.   Cognitive Component: * Think about what you accomplished last class, still need to do on this project, and the first steps you will take today. * Write your goals for the day on your Time Log and be prepared to share. 11 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2011
