Core Outcomes: Completion of Degrees & Certificates AND Time & Units to Completion Layheng Ting, Ph.D. Institutional Research Analyst October 20, 2017 Present Outline here: Each core outcome will include Metrics with Operational Definitions; Data; & Benchmark.

Degree & Certificate Completion Core Outcome: Degree & Certificate Completion

Operational Definitions Certificate – Number of Chancellor’s Office approved certificates (requiring 30 to < 60 semester units) completed. Degree – Number of Associate Degree completed Graduate or Completer – Student who received one or more certificates or degrees in the specified year, with each student counted once. Graduation Rate:  Percentage of full-time, first time, degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate students in a particular year after removing any allowable exclusions (adjusted cohort), who completed their program within 150 percent of normal time to completion. IPEDS: Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System

Number of Awards 97% Increase Source: Chancellor’s Office, Data Mart, Accessed on 9/22/2017 97% Increase

Completer/Graduate 57% Increase Source: Chancellor’s Office, Data on Demand, accessed on 9/22/2017 57% Increase Goal in Vision for Success: Increase by at least 20 percent annually the number of students earning an associate degree, credential, certificate, or specific skill set.

Graduation Rates Source: IPEDS, accessed on 9/13/17

Benchmark Completer: Increase by at least 20 percent annually the number of students earning an associate degree, credential, certificate, or specific skill set (Vision for Success, CCCCO, 2017) ACCJC - Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges IEPI=Institutional effectiveness Partnership Initiative

Time & Units to Degree Completion Core Outcome: Time & Units to Degree Completion

Operational Definitions Median Time to Degree: The median number of years from the time of a student's first enrollment at Hartnell College taking a credit course until the time they receive an AA, AS, or ADT degree. Median Units to Degree: The median number of units completed from the time of a student's first enrollment at Hartnell College taking a credit course until the time they receive an AA, AS, or ADT degree. Why only “time to Degree” NOT “Time to Certificate”?

Vision for Success: Students earning an associate degree complete approximately 87 total units on average, 27 more units than required for most degrees or transfer preparation. Data Source: Hartnell College’s Database, accessed on 10/02/2017

Benchmark for Time to Degree  Time to Degree: 3 years (Student Right to Know) Peer Institutions 2013-14 2014-15 2015-16 3 year average West Hill Coalinga 3.3 2.9 2.7 3.0 West Hill Lemoore 3.1 Reedley 3.7 3.4 El Camino Porterville 3.9 3.8 Rio Hondo Imperial 4.2 4.0 Los Angeles Harbor 4.3 Chaffey San Bernardino Desert  Oxnard Merced Hartnell 4.7 4.4 Southwestern Cerritos Mt. San Antonio 4.8 4.5 East Los Angeles Long Beach 4.6 Los Angeles Mission Riverside Bakersfield 4.9 Los Angeles Trade-Tech 5.3 5.0 Why HC data is little different form IEPI data, because MIS First Enrollment Date starts only from 1992SU. HC database pulls students’ Start Date from 1983. Source: Chancellor's Office, IEPI

Benchmark for Units to Degree  Units to Degree: 60 units Reduce the average number of excess credits accumulated by students who complete their degrees or certificates. Students earning an associate degree complete approximately 87 total units on average, 27 more units than required for most degrees or transfer preparation (Vision for Success, 2017) Goal in Vision for Success: Reduce the average number of excess credits accumulated by students who complete their degrees or certificates. Students earning an associate degree complete approximately 87 total units on average, 27 more units than required for most degrees or transfer preparation.
