Biography Dorothea Lange was born on May 26th, 1895. She died on October 11th 1965. Her original name was Dorothea Nutzhorn. But when her parents divorced, She blamed her father and took her mothers last name “Lange”. She was born in Hoboken, New Jersey and died in San Francisco, California. She was married twice, her first husband was Maynard Dixon and her Second husband was Taylor Paul Schuster. She died of Esophageal cancer.

Childhood There was two major things that effected Dorothea’s life mentally and physically. In 1902, she contracted polio. Which permanently damaged her right leg. She limped for the rest of her life. When Dorothea was only twelve, her father abandoned her and her family. Her father never tried to contact them , he was just gone. Her mother basically neglected them due to having to take in a second job to support the family.

Childhood Dorothea studied at Columbia University, New York City where she took a course for photography. In 1918 she moved to San Francisco and opened a photography studio. She was photographing “plant and landscape” photography She didn’t really like it, so when the Great Depression started she took the streets and began to do documentary photography.
