New Netherland 1621-The Dutch West India Company is granted land from Dutch Government Found New Amsterdam (New York City) in 1625 The Dutch were able to profit from the fur trade
Diverse Colony Want to attract colonists to come so they open up doors to a variety of people- Germans, French, Scandinavians, and other European The Dutch generally enjoyed better relations with Native Americans than in New England and VA. More interested in trading fur with them
English Takeover 1664- Charles II gave his brother James, the Duke of York permission to drive out the Dutch The Dutch surrendered without bloodshed and James named his new territory New York. New Jersey was also created (British island of Jersey).

Quakers: services without formal minister, oppose war, believed God’s “inner light” shined in everyone.
