What is osmosis? Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a membrane Water moves from the area of lower concentration of solute to higher area concentration of solute…. In other words, water will move to “dilute” the more concentrated area.  Solute molecule Less concentrated- think you’ve diluted that super sweet beverage with water More concentrated- think super sweet beverage.

Hyperglycemia- High blood concentration outside of the cell aka- Hypertonic outside the cell  Glucose (Solute) Molecule H2O Water moves out of the cell to “dilute” the area of higher concentration When water moves out of the cell, the cell shrinks

Water moves into the cell to “dilute” the area of higher concentration Hypoglycemia- Low blood concentration outside of the cell aka- Hypotonic outside the cell  Glucose (Solute) Molecule H2O Water moves into the cell to “dilute” the area of higher concentration When water inside of the cell, the cell swells

Water moves in and outside of the cell at the same rate Normal Blood Sugar- Normal concentration outside of the cell and inside the cell. aka- Isotonic  Glucose (Solute) Molecule H2O Water moves in and outside of the cell at the same rate When water moves in and out of the cell, so the cell stays the same.
