What we will do What we will learn 12Px 15 Mahuru 2017 Preliminaries and roll How to start well Revisit the Des Cartes formula for spherical mirrors AND the double formula for magnification How to use algebra to deal with curved mirrors Revisit why Mr H disagrees with the book ignoring the negative on m. Use a four-way chart to help us understand m. How to use the value for m to extract really useful information Watch Mr H do 3 medium-difficulty examples How to use the new method If time, watch Mr H do 2 really tough examples (volunteers only) (f=do) & (f and m, find di and do) How to use the new method for really tricky ones. HRT, HW marking and proof of formula How to make great use of time.

HW item Skills practiced Waves: pp 6 &7 Due: Tuesday 5th of Sept 2017 Transmission and reflection of pulses at boundaries Waves: pp 10 & 11 Water waves, wave speeds and refraction Waves: pp 12 - 14 Diffraction, both around obstacles and through gaps PLUS Effect on diffraction of wavelength Waves: pp 17 - 21 Due: Tuesday 12th of Sept 2017 Superposition and Interference Waves: p 24 Due: Tuesday 19th of Sept 2017 Reflection of light from plane mirrors Waves: pp 28 - 30 Reflection from curved mirrors – by scale drawing Waves: pp 32 - 35 Due: Thursday 21st of Sept 2017 Reflection from curved mirrors – by formulae (Des Cartes and m)

Homework Marking No. of marks What for 1 Having sketches & FULL working for all Neat presentation and down-page format Answer underlined and units given Self marked and all correct – eventually In on time and signed for (“This is my own work”…….) Total A mark out of five that will contribute to the “homework” grade in the reports

There are 3 sets of words that are used to describe images with precision. Real and Virtual: Real Images are made where light rays ACTUALLY cross over. They form an image that can be shone onto paper. Virtual Images are made where the light rays looked like they have come from (even though they don’t actually cross over). They form an image that can only be seen when looking into the mirror (or through a lens) Diminished, Same Size or Magnified. Images are normally a different size to the object. Diminished means “made smaller” Upright, Inverted or Non-Existent Real Images are always INVERTED (upside down) and virtual images are always upright. There is the special case where an image might not exist at all.
