She took her first flying lessons in the spring of 1940 and within a year was the first female flight instructor in Nashville, Tennessee. Upon the establishment of the Civilian Pilot Training Program, she was hired as a flight instructor in Fort Collins, Colorado. In the fall of 1941 she moved to Hawaii to teach flying out of John Rodgers Airport in Honolulu. She was aloft with a student pilot on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, narrowly avoiding a mid-air collision with one of the attacking enemy planes.
