Our Message The Foundation defines an affordable home as one that people of limited means can afford to own, operate and maintain over the long-term. By incorporating responsible design, each home uses durable and quality materials, is more energy and water efficient, has good indoor air quality, and is overall a safe and healthy space to live.

Accomplishments In 2008, The Home Depot Foundation: Assisted in the production or preservation of 14,734 affordable housing units built responsibly Planted or restored more than 200,000 community trees Built 59 KaBOOM! playgrounds across the U.S., Canada and Mexico and supported 100 KaBOOM! blitz refurbishment projects Exceeded $50M in cash and in-kind donations to more than 5,100 nonprofit organizations

Affordable Housing Built Responsibly Sustainable Community Development Primary Focus Areas The Home Depot Foundation Funds: Affordable Housing Built Responsibly Sustainable Community Development Sustainable Community Development is a new focus area for the Foundation and spurred from our work with The US Conference of Mayors. We heard from them that they go to conferences and learn things regarding sustainability and sign on to agreements such as the Climate Action Plan and then return to their Cities and don’t know where to begin the implementation process. We have created the Sustainable Cities Institute as a way of helping address their concerns. The Sustainable Cities Institute will serve as: 1) a user-friendly, content-rich website of best tools, policies, practices and case studies for all cities to use in their sustainability principles, and 2) a convener, facilitator and educator bringing experts into selected U.S. cities to assist in developing and implementing sustainability plans and policies.

Affordable Housing Built Responsibly How We Fund: Regional Grants Direct solicitation and set asides Range from $50k - $125k Program and Project specific support National Grants Affordable Housing Intermediaries Range from $250k - $30mil Re-granting and Technical Assistance THDF makes grants to 501c(3) tax-exempt organizations throughout the United States. Support is given to programs and projects that align with the Foundation’s mission and grant criteria. To better support our mission, the Foundation awards most of its grants by directly soliciting proposals from high-performing nonprofit organizations with the demonstrated ability to create strong partnerships, impact multiple communities and leverage grant resources. Also, in order to identify potential future nonprofit partners or respond to unique community revitalization opportunities, a limited amount of unsolicited grant funding is set aside to be awarded through a competitive process. Preference is given to proposals that include community engagement that result in the production, preservation, or financing of housing units for low- to moderate- income families. The most promising proposals incorporate a number of the “green” building design practices listed on this slide.

Mitchell Chase Subdivision – Cobb Housing, Inc. Partnership with Southface Energy Institute and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association to build 31 single-family homes that incorporated green building design measures and products in their construction.

Building for Long Term Success Piloted Partner in Sustainable Building program with Habitat for Humanity which will result in the production of 5,000 Habitat homes over the next 5 years that will attain Energy Star Plus or higher green building standard. Our latest national partnership relationship is that with HFHI. This is by far the largest grant that the Foundation has made to date, $30 million over 5-years.

Store Product Donation Program 850 Home Depot stores nationwide partnered with, and donating to, local nonprofits Over $13M of product donated to nonprofit partners Over 3,500 tons of good, usable merchandise diverted from landfills Another example of how THDF is helping nonprofit organizations and the environment at the same time is with our Framing Hope Program which is a partnership with Gifts In-kind International. *since program creation in February 2008

A Comprehensive Approach At times, we believe the opportunity to help a community transform itself requires a deeper, broader and more enduring commitment than a typical grant or volunteer project allows. In those situations, we have made investments in partnership with the leadership of specific cities and local nonprofit organizations to foster long term change. These commitments are focused in small geographic areas where we intend to demonstrate the benefits of taking a comprehensive approach to affordable housing and community revitalization. In these situations, we also leverage our relationships with national nonprofits that provide training, technical assistance and additional funding. In cities such as Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Detroit and Atlanta, we have made multi-year pledges of funding, expertise and volunteers to make lasting impacts and meet a broad array of issues that directly affect the lives of families.
