Independence Children are now in the upper school, and independence should be encouraged. Teach your child to look at the timetable. Pack their own bag. Bring their bag up to class alone.

New subjects this year History -The Ancient Egyptians Geography

Mathematics It is essential that your children learn their times tables. They will be tested each week, starting with the 2x tables. By the end of the year, they should know their 2-12 times tables Mental maths will be practiced daily. Reading Each child has a reading book. You should hear your child read the set pages at least 3 to 4 times. Please ensure books are kept in a plastic envelope. Library books should be changed on a regular basis and children should be encouraged to read them. Useful website www.oxfordowl.co.uk

Composition Children will be taught to use paragraphs and punctuation. We will discuss settings, characters, sequence of events and new vocabulary. Compositions will be completed in class. Useful website : www.nightzookeeper.com

Spelling Words for a test are brought home on Monday. Please practice the spelling pattern with them, as well as learning the words off by heart. Weekly spelling tests are on Fridays. Patterns can be practiced on : http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/lookcover/lookcover.html .

History - Geography - Science Quizzes and projects will be given for each subject. Useful website : www.sheppardsoftware.com

P.E. There are two PE lessons each week. One lesson is swimming (until the end of October ). Children must remember to bring their swimming bag with their towel, swimming cap and flip flops. Our pool is heated. The other lesson is in the PE court.

Practical Measures Lessons start at 8.15 am and children should be on time. Homework will be given on a daily basis. Messages can be written in the children’s homework book. Water bottles should be labelled. ALL clothing should be labelled.

Tests and Quizzes You will be notified a week in advance before tests in Maths and English. Quizzes will be given without prior warning. Grades are not based only on tests. Homework, participation, effort, quizzes and presentation of projects are also taken into consideration.

Reports Reports will be given out to parents in January and at the end of the year.

Class website/ Weebly The class websites are: http://gjs3a.weebly.com/ The subjects for homework will be given, but the children will still be responsible for writing the work to be completed. The website can work as a back up.
