Endocrine System Function- to maintain homeostasis by regulating chemical signals throughout the body

Homeostasis In order to adapt & survive, the human body must stay in a state of homeostasis.

Hunger & thirst are examples of a homeostasis mechanism in an organism.

Homeostasis in the human body includes the regulation of:

-oxygen & carbon dioxide levels -nutrient & waste product levels -water balance -body temperature

-Consists of glands that produce chemical messengers called hormones. The Endocrine System -Consists of glands that produce chemical messengers called hormones.

-Hormones are released directly into the bloodstream where they are carried to other parts of the body.

-Hormones turn on, turn off, speed up or slow down the activities of certain organs, tissues or cells.

Types of glands…

Pituitary Gland This is considered the “master gland”. Secretes hormones that control other glands.

Pineal Gland Located in the middle of the brain. Secretes melatonin. Helps to regulate when you sleep at night and when you wake up in the morning.

Thyroid Gland Located in the front of the lower neck. Secretes thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Controls the rate at which our cells burn food to produce energy.

Adrenal Gland Two glands: one found on top of each kidney. Produces corticosteroids and catecholamines (adrenaline). Controls the body’s response to stress.

Reproductive Glands Hormones secreted are called Gonads. Males produce hormones called androgens, most importantly testosterone. Females produce estrogen and progesterone. Controls the changes associated with puberty and pregnancy.

Pancreas Long, flat gland found in the belly, not technically part of the endocrine system. Produces insulin and glucagon. Helps control the levels of glucose in the body.

Diabetes: Occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to process glucose so sugar builds up in the blood stream.

Thyroid hormones: The thyroid secretes the hormones that control the bodies metabolism.

Hyperthyroidism: The thyroid secretes too many hormones so metabolism speeds up.

Hypothyroidism: The thyroid does not secrete enough hormones so metabolism slows down.
