CHAPTER 15 Ventilation: Tactical Priorities © James Quigg/AP Photos CHAPTER 15 Ventilation: Tactical Priorities Basic Indicators of Roof Collapse (Fire Fighter II) 1

Fire Fighter II Objectives List the three tactical priorities in structural firefighting operations and how the tactical priorities affect ventilation operations. Identify the warning signs of roof collapse. 2

Venting for Life Safety Gives occupants a greater chance to survive Makes searches faster Limits fire spread to other occupants and fire fighters 3

Venting for Containment Second highest priority is to contain the fire and control the situation. Prevents fire spread Makes fire attacks easier 4

Venting for Property Conservation Can significantly limit property damage Rapid ventilation reduces damage from smoke, heat, and water. 5

Basic Indicators of Roof Collapse Visible sagging Roof separating from the walls Structural failure in another portion of building Sudden increase in fire intensity High heat indicators on a thermal imaging camera 6

Summary Ventilation is related to life safety, fire containment, and property conservation. Fire fighters should be aware of the roof condition when performing vertical ventilation tasks. 7
