11-6 Rational Expressions with Like Denominators Algebra 1 Glencoe McGraw-Hill Linda Stamper
As with fractions, to add or subtract rational expressions with like, or the same denominators, combine their numerators and write the result over the common denominator. Then simplify, if necessary. / 1 / When you are subtracting rational expressions with like denominators, place the subtracted quantity in parentheses. Then distribute the negative.
You must place the subtracted quantity in parentheses! Simplify. Example 1 Example 2 1 You must place the subtracted quantity in parentheses! Factor out a –1 to make the y positive.
Be careful with inverse denominators. Rewrite in good form (variable first). Factor out a -1. Remove negative one from denominator by changing the term sign to the opposite. Subtract. Negative monomial in numerator so bring negative sign out front.
