Next Generation Standards Progression K 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 HS Counting & Cardinality Number and Operations in Base Ten Ratios and Proportional Relationships Number & Quantity Number and Operations – Fractions The Number System Operations and Algebraic Thinking Expressions and Equations Algebra Functions Geometry Measurement and Data Statistics and Probability Statistics & Probability Geometry is the only standard that crosses all grade bands. Major emphasis on basic fraction concepts in 3-5. Statistics and Probability moved from elementary.

Key Fluencies by Grade K 1 2 3 Add/subtract within 5 By the end of grade 2, know from memory all sums of two 1-digit numbers. Add/subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 3 Multiply/divide within 100 using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division or properties of operations. Multiply/divide within 100 By the end of grade 3, know from memory all products of two 1-digit numbers. Add/subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Key Fluencies means students are expected to own these concepts inside and out by the time they leave the specified grade level. They should be fluent in the listed skills at each grade level to be considered proficient.

Key Fluencies by Grade 4 Add/subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. Multiply up to 4 digits by 1 digit and two 2-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations; illustrate and explain using equations, arrays, and/or area models Divide up to 4 digits by 1 digit using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division; illustrate and explain using equations, arrays, and/or area models. 5 Multi-digit multiplication using the standard algorithm. Divide up to 4 digits by up to 2 digits using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division; illustrate and explain using equations, arrays, and/or area models. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction, relate the strategy to a written method and explain the strategy used. 6 Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm. Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. Kids understand place value The thinking and reasoning Developing Number sense Causes them to problem solve Sometimes the algorithm has so many steps, they memorize, but don’t have understanding Benefits of strategies other than the standard algorithm: Fewer errors Less re-teaching required Left-handed, not right to left Develops and strengthens number sense

What can be done at home Make sure that your student is able to complete the key fluencies at his/her grade level. Practice facts
