Lunar Calibration activities Status of GIRO and GLOD policy, infrastructure and study on inter-calibration S. Wagner, B. Viticchiè, T. Hewison
GSICS Implementation of the ROLO model (GIRO) Intellectual Property Rights cleared for ancillary data (solar and lunar spectra) + SPICE kernels: Acknowledgement to the data and tool producers Details about the composite lunar surface reflectance spectrum to be provided (ID numbers + weights in the composite) IPRs cleared with Numerical Recipes routines: Coded rewritten from scratch (GIRO v1.1.0) Verified against version with Numerical Recipes (see following slides) Next steps: EUMETSAT’s internal procedure for Verification + Validation by end September 2016 Code analysis to check license compliance by mid-October 2016 Preparation of a License Agreement to be agreed and signed by licensees = Condition for access to the GIRO + GLOD (following the policy presented at GSICS EP in May 2015) by end September 2016 Set-up of an infrastructure for GIRO + GLOD on EUMETSAT’s website (web page with relevant information/documents + helpdesk service + link to GIRO + GLOD repositories) by end 2016
Verification of the GIRO v1.1.0 Geometries from MSG1 time series Top panel: collection of “smooth” reflectance spectra organized in progressive number (along the X axis). Central panel: difference between the reflectance spectra image in the top panel and the same image derived with the old version of the robust linear fitting as found in [NRC]; + comparisons of a and b coeffs from linear fit (varying between the dotted lines) Bottom panel: transect of the difference image (central panel) along the frequencies of the MSG1 VNIR bands which are calibrated using the GIRO (see the legend).

GSICS Lunar Observation Dataset Contains Moon observations from all instruments using GIRO please provide updates if required Helps builds consensus on absolute calibration of GIRO Helps develop inter-calibration methods Timeline for distribution = same as the GIRO Distribution to GIRO source code and GLOD upon signature of the license agreement not blocked by the availability of the infrastructure
Coming up soon… Interaction with USGS to document the traceability of the GIRO to the ROLO: Definition of a benchmark for testing systematically the GIRO against the ROLO Will be part of the GLOD Could be used to test other models Formalising the traceability Preparation of a paper to be used as the reference to the GIRO for future publications Mid-November = planned date for the study on the validation of SBAFs with lunar hyperspectral measurements. Implementation of the inter-calibration scheme proposed at the GSICS annual meeting in 2016 prototype by end 2016
GSICS and GLOD usage policy Please remember the policy… So-far agreed by email but still, it is in place and shall be followed. Link under the Lunar Calibration Algorithm Work Area (GSICS wiki): http://gsics.atmos.umd.edu/pub/Development/LunarWorkArea/GSICS-EP-16_Doc_13_GIRO-GLOD-policy.pdf
Second Lunar Calibration Workshop Listing potential topics to be addressed…
Background First Lunar Calibration Workshop Hosted by EUMETSAT December 2014 Second Lunar Calibration Workshop (still to be confirmed) Co-organised and hosted by the Chinese Meteorological Administration Probably second half 2017 Topics still to be defined Examples of Moon observations from instruments represented in First Lunar Calibration Workshop
Proposed main topics Measurement/observation campaigns: Outcome of those campaigns (dataset, analysis, new model, better characterisation of existing model, etc.) CMA SELENE? Experiments using CIMEL? How to use those measurements? Hyperspectral from space? SCIAMACHY, HYPERION, OCO-2? Improvement of the ROLO/GIRO: e.g. how to make use of all the measurements? Inter-calibration using the Moon Alternative methods: radiance maps of the Moon and their use for absolute calibration using Moon sites as invariant targets, new lunar references, etc.
Potential items to categorise… ROLO/GIRO: Interpretation of the results Definition & Development of a common analysis tool (for GIRO input/output) user requirements + implementation (by who?) Workshop to compare the outcome? Evolution of the ROLO/GIRO (Traceability) What about the old question of the oversampling factor? Inter-calibration: Similarly, definition of a common tool for comparisons Measurement/observation campaigns: Commissioning/Validation data: MSG1, MSG3, AHI (Himawari 8 + 9), ABI, FY-2H, other? What could we make out of those data?
