Changing school physical environmet for improving communication within the school Principal of LEPL Village Satrichala #2 Public school, Gardabani Municipality sartichala2@mes.gov.ge 577172285 2017

Pupil-centered school environment Goal: To share measures taken at school for creating pupil-centered instructional environment

Implemented measures Results/outcomes Situation in academic year 2015-2016 Implemented measures Results/outcomes Inactive, locked-up in a little room library Allocating a new wider room for the library and arranging reading places in them Increased number of readers, variety of events Non-existence of labs- dull lessons, low motivation among pupils Making a lab Lab work conducted with available at school chemicals, increased number of interesting lessons Only principal’s and computer rooms provided with the Internet Providing the whole school with the Internet Teachers use internet-resources, the school participates in the project of testing an electronic journal Lackluster, boring classroom environment – desks arranged in a traditional way, empty walls Pupils were given freedom to arrange classroom environment Non-standard arrangement of desks, rooms for relaxation. Walls decorated by pupils with pictures, drawings, etc. Frequent conflicts during breaks, pupils’ outflow from school Music time during breaks, coffee breaks In the school corridor there is made a musical corner, in the classrooms there are coffee and tea corners; conflicts are driven to the minimum

Efficient spaces for socializing created with minimum effort “Free speech wall”

Creating open working space for pupils by placing chairs and tables in a school corridor

Music weeks of diverse genres arranged in school corridors

Pupils started coming into my room without any formalities, the same about teachers’ room and they openly and without hesitation talk about any problem. It causes indignation in some teachers, who say that such practice was even unimaginable in their youth, that it must not be happening…. “These are teachers’ stairs, go back and use pupils’ stairs!!!”

Renewed library

Outcomes of implemented activities Enhanced mutual respect Altered, direct and caring relationships between pupils and teachers More initiatives from pupils

Thanks for your attention!
