Implementation Planning Session Friday August 18 morning
Explore the resources Look through the online materials serc.carleton.edu/getsi Analyzing High Rez Topo module Identify the unit/s that you are most likely to use Explore look at pptx, look at student exercise, try answering some question, maybe do some calculations… Think how you might use/modify…
Divide by teaching situation of likely implementation Summer Field Camp Academic year instrument-oriented course Academic year topical course Special situation (ex. spring break trip) Answer questions and report back What do you need/want from UNAVCO (& co)? What do you need to do to be ready? Couple examples of the methods & courses people are aiming for Maybe next year suggest two divisions for topics courses (ex. geomorph & other)
What do you need/want from UNAVCO (& co)? Broader impact support could include data archiving for research and/or education Educational GPS systems!! Software licenses available to the community Webinar series and tutorials for new software or software changes or people who can’t do longer course Virtual short courses Series of tutorial videos (short ones for each step) Include TAs/graduate students Any kind of support that shows change (4D geology) Repository for data or other facilitation of data/field site sharing (potential map of field “hot spots” Community message boards
What do you need to do? Time and money Software More time more money Self learning Distilling what they have learned here into processed based tractable 2-hour something; single-day field trip Modifying for CC setting (occupational students) Get FAA cert 107 (JJ is developing a course that will be opening available for this)
Some examples of plans? Quarter class civil engineers – start w GPS, move to SfM (multi stages), maybe TLS Geol 3000 level GIS – Field mapping integrate some SfM Field camp – rescanning same location every year; effectively splitting students into work groups Monitoring landslide close to campus – repeat measurements 300 level geomorph – SfM going – super basic, outcrop scale, and then some students do term research projects 200-level structural geol – good duplex site near campus to start w SfM CC-modified versions of SfM; using different softwares
