Today’s Sermon: Psalm 17, “Prayer For Protection Against Oppressors” by Pastor Jim Bomkamp

Prev. background, Psalm 15 King David described for us what person it is who may ascend up to God’s dwelling, and the rest of the Psalm is a list of character qualities of such a man.

Prev. background, Psalm 16 1. Here, the Psalmist stated the fact that the Lord is the portion or inheritance of the saint, and we discussed the fact that what the grace of God is in our lives as believers in Christ, is God Himself. 2. The Psalm then turned Messianic and the Messiah spoke through David about how that He will not suffer decay, and we saw that this foretold the conquering of death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Outline of Psalm 17: 1. We will discuss how that in this Psalm and other places in the Psalms that King David beseeches the Lord’s help pleading from his own innocence and righteousness. 2. King David is pleading to the Lord for help from his oppressor. 3. King David asks the Lord to keep him as the apple of His eye. 4. An incredible statement is made by King David about the assurance he had about bodily resurrection of God’s people. 5. A Commentary Critical And Explanatory quote:

Psalms 17:1-3: King David asks the Lord to hear his just cause, and to heed his cry

Psalms 17:4: As for the deeds of men he has kept from the paths of the violent

Psalms 17:5: King David writes of his own perseverance

Psalms 17:6: King David is encouraged to call upon the Lord because he had already called upon the Lord, and the Lord inclined

Psalms 17:7: He asks the Lord to work wondrously and show His lovingkindness,

Psalms 17:8-9: King David asks the Lord to keep him as the apple of His eye, and to hide him in the shadow of His wings

Psalms 17:10: Adversaries have closed their unfeeling hearts to him

Psalms 17:11: Adversaries had now surrounded him

Psalms 17:12-14: His adversary is like a young lion lurking in hiding places and ready to tear his flesh

Psalms 17:15: He will behold the Lord’s face in righteousness and that he will be satisfied with the Lord’s likeness when he awakes
