Classification of Congresses LCCS Training Sessions OSU Aug. 2007

Congresses - 1 Congresses = Conferences Form captions for congresses at beginning of major topics Example: Physics QC1 Periodicals, societies, congresses, serial publications

Congresses - 2 Example 2: Plant anatomy QK640 Periodicals. Societies. Serials   QK640.2 Collected works (nonserial)   QK640.3 Congresses

Congresses - 3 Class here collected papers for congresses, symposia, meetings, conferences, etc. Also condensations of such papers Reports of proceedings and discussions, program statements, lists of delegates, etc. Combinations of the above

Congresses – 4 Do not class here: Reports of business meetings of organizations Treat these as society publications and class accordingly

Number Established for Congresses Class both serial and monographic congresses in numbers specifically established for “Congresses” Do not class under “Periodicals” unless congresses are specifically included (as in example 1 in previous slide)

Number Not Established for Congresses If no number is established, class monographs in “General works” class serials in “Periodicals” Example: TF (Railroad engineering and operation) TF371-377 Rolling stock and car building     TF371 Periodicals   TF373 Dictionaries and encyclopedias   TF375 General works

Number Not Established for Congresses Always class the work with the most specific topic Do not class congresses with a broader topic because there is a number established for “Congresses” there Example: A work on bridge testing would be classed in TG305 (Bridge testing) not TG5 (Bridge engineering – Congresses)

Continuations of Serial Congresses If the numbering continues between two (or more) serial records representing the same congress, class all continuations in the same call number
