THE COLLAPSE OF COMMUNISM IN THE WEST The weakening of the USSR begins in the mid 1980’s. A. The USA had been exporting grain to help the USSR feed itself. B. The Star Wars Program was breaking the defense budget of the USSR. C. The Chernobyl disaster calls Soviet industry and energy capabilities into question.
