Myths The Flight of Icarus is a myth, a traditional story that attempts to answer basic questions about human nature, origins of the world, mysteries of nature, and social customs. A myth is also a form of entertainment that people have enjoyed since ancient times.

Myth Elements Most myths share these elements: • gods and other supernatural beings with special powers • supernatural events and settings • a lesson about life or human nature (Theme)

Myths may also explain the origins of natural phenomena, such as volcanoes or constellations, or warn against the consequences of human error. Often, myths reveal the values that are of greatest cultural importance to a society, such as honesty, cleverness, and moderation, which means acting within reasonable limits. Myths were used to guide ancient people’s behavior in a way that reflected these values and beliefs.

Copy these statements and answer them in your notebooks. Explain how each of these statements is true for The Flight of Icarus : • In a myth, events occur that cannot happen in real life. (Example from The Flight of Icarus: ) …………………………………………………………...................... • A mythical character has unusual abilities. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. • A myth shows the values of a culture. (Rules or what is important to the society)

Vocabulary Test The vocabulary test will start in 10 minutes Make sure you know the spelling and meaning of each of the words on your list.

Determining Theme To determine theme, we should think about what the characters want, what they do and how well they succeed. From this we can usually guess whether their actions are good or bad in their culture. Good behaviour is encouraged or rewarded, and bad behaviour is discouraged or punished in the myths.
