Can you follow directions?

Do you know the intermediate directions? Cardinal directions Most common directions on maps North, South, East, West Do you know the intermediate directions?

Intermediate directions How about more directions? Points located half way between the cardinal directions Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest How about more directions?

The science of mapmaking Cartography The science of mapmaking What is latitude? What is longitude?

The angular distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees Latitude The angular distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees Equator = 00 Poles = 900 Parallel: any circle that runs east and west around the Earth and that is parallel to the equator; a line of latitude

Latitude The horizontal lines that circle the globe are called Lines of Latitude. Lines of Latitude are also known as parallels because they parallel, or run in the same direction as the Equator.

Longitude the angular distance east or west of the prime meridian measured in degrees. 00 to 1800 Because a circle is 3600, the meridian opposite the prime meridian, halfway around the World, is labeled 1800. There are east lines of longitude and west lines of longitude. East lines of longitude meet west lines of longitude forming the International Dateline at 1800.

Longitude The lines that run between the North and the South Poles are called Lines of Longitude, or meridians.

Lines are not parallel. Distances vary with each location. Lines of longitude converge at the poles into one point. At the equator the degree of longitude is more (larger) than a degree near the poles. The degree of distance decreases as you move away from the equator to the poles.

Prime Meridian: imaginary line representing 00 longitude, running from the north pole, through Greenwich, England, to the south pole International dateline: it is at 1800 meridian, serves as the transition line for calendar days

Hemispheres Geographers divide the earth into hemispheres. Everything north of the equator is in the Northern Hemisphere, while everything south of the equator is in the Southern Hemisphere. The Western Hemisphere is west of the Prime Meridian, while the Eastern Hemisphere is east of the Prime Meridian. The hemispheres both end at the International Date Line.
