Location It is located on the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The volcano is about 20 miles (32 km) north of Yogyakarta and somewhat farther south of Semarang. It is situated at a subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian Plate is subducting under the Sunda Plate
history Even though Mount Merapi is the youngest Volcano in Southern Java, it happnes to be the most active one. Stratigraphic analysis reveals that eruptions in the Merapi area began about 400,000 years ago, and from then until about 10,000 years ago, eruptions were typically effusive, and the out flowing lava emitted was basaltic (dark rock of lava).
