Bellringer Kenning: A kenning is a miniature riddle, a poetic synonym, a descriptive phrase or compound word that SUBSTITUTES FOR A NOUN. Look at the following examples from Beowulf: “the Almighty’s enemy” and “sin-stained demon” To whom do these kennings refer?

Grendel: “the Almighty’s enemy”

Characteristics of an Epic (page 29) Copy the bullets in your spiral notebook: Epics from different languages and time periods share many of the same characteristics, including: -The hero, generally a male, is of noble birth or high position and of great historical or legendary importance. -The hero’s character traits reflect important ideals of his society.

-The actions of the hero often decide the fate – the wyrd – of a nation or group of people. -The plot is complicated by supernatural beings or events and may involve a long and dangerous journey through foreign lands.

While reading “Grendel”—page 33-35 Find at least one example of: ALLITERATION FORESHADOWING KENNINGS Write down the quotation, the line reference, and the page number.

HOMEWORK Define the 15 “Words to Know” found on page 30. Write a nursery rhyme (or a series of nursery rhymes) using 10 of the 15 words. Underline the words in your rhymes.

HOMEWORK Example There once was a girl who had an affliction: she talked and she talked with really bad diction. She would make her lament, that she lived in a tent, and was livid because she had not a cent.
