Graphic Novel Assignment

Project Overview Objective Take a historical topic, and turn it into a graphic novel or comic story. This Task will require you to Script your Pages Storyboard Produce your short graphic novel

Project Procedure Day 1: Project Overview Students take a totalitarian nation and turn it into a graphic novel or comic story. Topic-totalitarian nation: Italy, Japan, Germany, Spain, and Soviet Union Focus on the post-war period 1919-1939.

Project Procedure Days 2-3: Historical Research Students work on completing Graphic Novel Research Totalitarianism handout for their country. The goal is to understand the topic and to develop ideas for how they will create their graphic novel.

Project Procedure Days 4-6: Creating a Graphic Novel Focus on storyboarding, scripting, and drawing their novel.

Project Procedure Day 7 Graphic novels are due. Students review their graphic novels as a group

Scripting and Layout When Scripting, its important to know how your page is going to lay out, that way you can organize the action Some artists Layout the page and then Script Others Script and then layout The preference is up to you

Layout Guidelines Graphic Novels Read From Left to Right Top to Bottom

Layout Guidelines Sometimes an artist can get a little more creative, but still, the artwork reads from Left to Right, and then top to bottom.

Tips on Getting Started

Step One: Research Get acquainted with the source material. Complete the Graphic Novel Research: Totalitarianism

Step Two: Storyboarding Rough draft You sketch what you want on the page to see how it will work visually and if you need to tweak it.

Backgrounds Internet is your friend Research what it looks like back in the area you are creating. Find distinctive characteristics and place those in the backgrounds Keep it simple!!!

Step 3 : Production 15 panel minimum Original Artwork Can be digital Can use generic form
